This utterly wonderful painting strongly recalls Anton Chekhov’s equally wonderful 1887 short story Kashtanka, ‘a young foxy-looking mongrel, belonging to a carpenter drunkard.’
Born in Coutrai in 1806, brother of the flower painter Henri Robbe (1807-1899), was a Belgian animal and landscape painter. He worked as lawyer before being trained in painting by Jan Baptiste de Jonghe (1785-1844) at Verboeckhoven. He won many prizes, among others at the Paris world fair in 1855. One of the youngest people ever to receive the honour, in 1845 he was made chevalier of the legion d'honneur.
Louis Robbe's work has been offered at auction multiple times, the record price being 9,909 USD for A Young Shepherdess sold at Christie’s Amsterdam in 2004.
