Richard Eurich OBE, RA was one of the pre-eminent British painters of the 20th century, best known for his landscapes, seascapes, wartime naval scenes and narrative paintings filled with atmosphere and mystery. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art under the influential teacher Henry Tonks - his early artistic development being encouraged by the illustrious Sir Edward Marsh who helped arrange his first solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery in London in 1929. In the Second World War, Eurich became an Official War Artist for the Admiralty through the War Artists’ Advisory Committee. His famous painting Withdrawal from Dunkirk, June 1940 brought him national recognition. Other notable wartime works included Survivors from a Torpedoed Ship (which Churchill particularly admired) and The Landing at Dieppe. Eurich was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1942 and became a full Royal Academician in 1953. He also became a member of the New English Art Club and was made an OBE. He died on 6 June 1992 in Southampton at the age of 89. Eurich’s work has been offered at auction multiple times, the record price being 177,844 USD for York Festival Triptych sold at Christie’s London in 2014.
