Jules Lefranc was a French painter associated with the Naïve Art movement. Born in Laval, he was largely self-taught and initially worked in commerce before dedicating himself fully to painting in 1928. His artistic career was encouraged by an early encounter with Claude Monet.
Lefranc became known for his meticulously detailed depictions of French towns, historic streets, harbours, and coastal scenes. His paintings often celebrated the character of old France, particularly his native Laval, as well as maritime subjects such as Mont-Saint-Michel and the Atlantic coast. His colourful, carefully observed works helped establish him as one of the notable French naïve painters of the twentieth century. His works remain represented in French museum collections, particularly in Laval, where he helped lay the foundations of the city's museum of naïve art.
Lefranc’s work has been offered at auction multiple times, the record price being 63,500 USD for Fumee sold at Sotheby's New York in 2025.
