Henri Victor Wolvens (1896–1977) was a Belgian painter, draughtsman and graphic artist, born in Brussels and best known for his atmospheric paintings of the Belgian coast. Initially influenced by Flemish Expressionism, he developed a highly personal style characterised by vigorous, heavily worked brushstrokes and a fascination with light and atmosphere. After settling in Bruges in 1930, the North Sea became his principal subject, inspiring luminous paintings of beaches, harbours, promenades and seascapes. His work is often associated with the Belgian Animist movement, although his individual style remained distinct. He exhibited widely and is represented in several Belgian museums.
Wolvens’ work has been offered at auction multiple times, the record price being $151,200 for Summer Pleasures at the Beach (1968) sold at Dev Vuyst in May 2023.
