Born in 1882, Alexandra Exter was one of the leading avant-garde painters of her generation. Her extraordinary talents as a painter, designer, and theatre artist left an indelible mark on the realms of Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism. Trained at the Kyiv Art School, her early work was deeply rooted in Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, but her relocation to Paris in 1908 – where she befriended Picasso, Braque, Guillaume Apollinaire - soon took her to the forefront of avant-garde art. Her works display a vibrant tapestry of geometric shapes, vivid colors and explorative abstraction. Exter's talent extended beyond the canvas. She also became a trailblazer in the field of costume and set design for the theatre. A number of her exuberant costume designs were Spanish in theme of which this is an example.
Exter’s work has been offered at auction multiple times, the record price being £1,049,250 for Venice 1925 sold at Sotheby’s London in 2009.
