Edward Wesson was a celebrated English painter best known for his atmospheric watercolours of landscapes, rivers, coastal scenes, and city views. Born in Blackheath, London, in 1910, he was largely self-taught and developed a distinctive style characterised by loose brushwork, economy of detail, and a remarkable ability to capture light and mood with minimal strokes.
Wesson began painting seriously in the 1930s while working in the textile trade, and his experiences during World War II further strengthened his artistic ambitions. By the 1950s he had become a full-time professional artist and gained recognition through exhibitions at the Royal Academy and other major institutions. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Society of Marine Artists.
In addition to painting, Wesson became highly respected as a teacher and demonstrator, inspiring generations of artists with his energetic and approachable methods. His work remains widely admired for its simplicity, confidence, and expressive handling of watercolour.
