This 19th century Chinese wall hanging, delicately hand-embroidered in lilac, pink and vermilion silk, is intended to confer blessings and good fortune on the household in which it is hung. The characters and symbols embroidered on the piece have been translated by a contemporary specialist of Chinese Kanji as follows (from left to right, starting top left): ‘Great & Complete’; ‘Peace’; ‘Good Fortune’; ‘Prominent & Favoured’; ‘Glorious Sons and Harmonious Grandsons’; ‘Prosperity’: ‘Receive Hundreds of Blessings from Heaven’; ‘Established Culture’; ‘Ten thousand’; ‘Taste the Clouds’; ‘Warranted’: ‘Inspired Thoughts’; ‘Auspicious & Prosperous’; ‘Wealth and Fortune through the Ages’; ‘Solution’; ‘Complete Origin’; ‘Happiness’; ‘Many Complex Layers’; ‘Ten Thousand’; ‘Comradeship’; ‘Forever Lucky’.
