Mathieu Weemaels was born in Brussels in 1967 where he later studied art at La Cambre, winning in 2001 the prize of the Royal Academy of Belgium. Inspired by the abstraction of such painters such Rothko, de Kooning, and Kandinsky, Weemaels is interested in several techniques, but his specialty is pastel. Each of such paintings begins with the application of dry pastels which the artist makes himself and which he loves for their subtlety and lightness. Next, he applies oil colours onto the canvas in a complicated process of layering whereby he develops depth and the overarching composition of the work.
