Born in Antwerp, Paul Joostens was one of the most idiosyncratic and important artists of the Belgian avant-garde. Initially his work centred on Cubist painting before, from 1920, turning to Dadaist collages and abstract objects using recycled materials in the style of Kurt Schwitters. Around 1925, he abandoned modernist strictures, forging an original style, ‘Joosten Gothic.’ In 1976, a retrospective was dedicated to him at the International Cultural Centre in Antwerp.
Joostens’ work has been offered at auction multiple times, the record price being 37,228 USD for Collage 22 sold at De Vuyst in 2022.
