Russian artist Vitaly Grigoryev is famous for the painstaking, photorealistic exactitude of his paintings. Dr. Cristof Graf Douglas, Head of Sothebys, Germany, said of him: ‘For the entire time of my professional carrier I haven’t met an artist whose portraits and still-lifes were performed so superbly’. Born in Kishinev, Moldova, Grigoryev attended the Saint-Petersburg academy of arts, graduating in 1983. In 1984, he was accepted to the Youth Union of Artists of the USSR and in 1988 to the Union of Artists of the USSR. Grigoryev is the member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine, the country in which he now lives and works. In 1988 he painted six still-lifes for the residence of the president of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachov in Foros, Crimea, Ukraine. The paintings of the artist are found in museum of Ukraine, Russia, Moldova and in the private collections of many countries of the world.
The Cloth was contained in a private collection of Grigoryev works from the age of 17 and his time as a student at The Academy in St. Petersburg. Completed in his mid-twenties, the drawing gives us a foretaste of his later still lives.
