Hunt Slonem is an American painter, sculptor and printmaker whose work uniquely combines representational imagery with Abstract Expressionist renderings. Best known for his colourful paintings of tropical birds (often based on his personal aviary in which he keeps from 30 to over 100 live birds of various species), butterflies, and rabbits, he is considered an integral member – together with Julian Schnabel and Georg Baselitz – of the Neo-Expressionist movement. Over fifty museums internationally include Slonem’s paintings in their collections, among them the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; the Brooklyn Museum of Art in Brooklyn, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Guggenheim in NY.
