Self-taught musician and artist Robert Strübin was born in Basel in 1897. Originally trained as a pianist, he turned to drawing in 1932, then to painting a few years later. He is known for his highly original pictorial invention: musical images – a method founded on the phenomenon of coloured hearing or photism, that is to say the subjective association of sounds through colour values.
Strübin’s work has been offered at auction multiple times, the record price being 16,275 USD for Musical Painting sold at Sotheby’s in 2011.
