Born in Sussex, Grace Pailthorpe was a surrealist artist and writer. She served as a surgeon in World War I, studied psychological medicine afterwards and embarked on a life of psychological art research. Automatism (the process of creating art without conscious thought) was the key to her practice. In the 1930s Pailthorpe contributed to the main Surrealist shows, but she fell out with the British Surrealist group in 1938 with the publication of The Scientific Aspect of Surrealism in 1938.
Pailthorpeās work has been offered at auction multiple times, the record price being 23,503 USD for San Titre sold at Bonhams Paris in 2023.
