Vicente Chumilla (Yecla, 1956) had two things clear at the age of fourteen: He wanted to paint and live in Madrid. He did both. Starting his working life as a woodcarver, Chumilla was profoundly influenced by José María Párraga (1927-1997) and Miguel Palao (1933-2003) with whom he established lasting friendships. Since the eighties, he has developed a career in which he has oscillated between the figurative and the abstract. He has experimented with all formats: painting, engraving, sculpture, drawing, collage yet his work is invariably characterised by a deftly economic expressionism. This wonderfully composed landscape collage is a quintessential example.
